Our backyard cottontail has discovered that if you sit absolutely still, neck-deep in greenery, the resident old dog will walk right past without even noticing you’re there.

Thank you for another gem from your serendipitous walks with Reggie.

The Stone Barn, Worth Matravers, Dorset
He sat there
Ears erect
Twitching
Flicking
Eyes squinting
In the early light of morning
Fresh, slanting.
Dew drops shining.
Grass nibbling
Hind paws scraping
Across the lawn hopping
Pausing
Looking
Whisker vibrating
Watching
Listening
Delighting!

I’m glad you enjoyed this, Anita and Ivy. Brianwakeman, it sounds like your backyard cottontail is exactly the same as ours.

How is Reggie?

Reggie’s doing a bit better these days, thanks to medication for both his arthritis and canine cognitive dysfunction, which apparently was causing many of his housebreaking accidents. He still has trouble with the steps, but I’ve taken to carrying him downstairs (he only wiggles a little!) and boosting his back-end when we go upstairs.
He still needs frequent trips outside and has occasional accidents, but I can deal with those as long as he’s generally doing well, which he is considering how old he is.
