Today’s Photo Friday theme is Athletic, which gives me a perfect excuse to share some photos from a sunny September football game between Boston College and UCF. Enjoy!

Ugh… fake grass. Still a cool pic, though. You’d think he was in that stadium all by himself.

Yes, it’s FieldTurf, just like they have at Gillette Stadium.
At Gillette, they have a few squares of FieldTurf outside the stadium for fans to feel, which we have at recent Revolution soccer games. It’s strange stuff. It looks more realistic when you’re close to it: lots of fans had to touch it to see if it was artificial or simply close-cropped. But when you walk on it, it definitely feels less “springy” than a good, grassy lawn.
I suppose when you’re a kicker, it helps to feel like you’re in the stadium all by yourself.

I loved the kicker in mid-flight shot so much I watched the whole darn slide show! Your photos made me feel like I was at the game with you. I love the jumbo-tron shots and the “Eagles hope for rebound” headline in the corner…I love how you captured all aspects of the game (cheerleaders, band, players, fans crowd-surfing, eagles on popcorn bags)…basically I have a lot of love for your photos. Thanks for sharing instead of hoarding.

I’m glad you enjoy the pictures, Jennifer: it’s always great to have you “visit.” When taking photos at an athletic event, I typically try to capture the “entire experience”: not just the action on the field, but the activity in the stands among fans, etc. So I’m glad you “got” that from the photo-set. It’s definitely the effect I was going for!
