Thursday was an on-again, off-again sunny day, and as I arrived on campus before my noon class, I saw a basking groundhog nibbling the spring-green grass in front of Parker Hall until several students walked by and unintentionally scared the creature into some nearby shrubs. It’s just as well, as by the time I began teaching my class, the campus grounds crew had appeared to mow this same patch of green grass: as sure a sign of spring sunshine as groundhogs and shadows are.
This is my contribution to today’s Photo Friday theme, Sunshine.

What a pity to shear his luxurious stand of grass just when it has reached perfect juicyness.
I am enjoying very much your literary tweets, excellent photographs, which I sometimes see on Bostonist, and your occasional longer blog posts.
Happy Spring.

I thought the same thing, Anita. How sad to mow someone’s salad! But given the combination of sun and rain we’ve been getting, I’m sure it will grow back.
I’m glad you enjoy my tweets, photos, etc. I’m looking forward to summer when I have more time to devote to the writing part of that “etc.”

We had a fat pair of groundhogs living near the entrance to our neighborhood last year, but I haven’t seen them yet this spring. I hope that doesn’t mean they’ve moved on.

I’ve never seen a groundhog in this particular spot, although I know they hang out elsewhere on campus. I’m not sure how far they range in terms of territory, but assuming they breed like rodents, I’m guessing there’s never a real shortage of them if they find a spot they like.
