We have exactly one day lily blooming in our yard: the rest are not-today lilies. Thursday is the summer solstice, but a June heat wave is forecast to start tomorrow, so today is as good a time as ever for the day lilies (or a single day lily) to start blooming.
The day lilies in our yard were planted by our house’s former owners, and unlike our other perennials they continue to sprout then bloom every year because the neighborhood rabbits don’t eat them. (Our backyard hostas, on the other hand, are long gone.)
I don’t know what makes a day lily decide to bloom today versus any other day, but day lilies are as reliable a sign of summer as any other.

Our day lilies usually appear about a month from now, I suppose because it’s cooler (and maybe darker?) here! I only see one stalk with buds at the moment. I don’t think we’re going to get a whole heck of a lot of them.

Judging from my Facebook memories, this is exactly when our day lilies typically bloom. (Today we have three.)
